Nyctophobia

Nyctophobia means fear of night or darkness. It is also known as Scotophobia.

Nyctophobia is present when you are frightened beyond more than the circumstances or object would cause.

And for these circumstances, there may be absolutely no reason whatsoever for you to be afraid about.

It is just that your mind exaggerates the condition that you are in and portrays it in such a way that causes you to think about it in a different kind of way that makes you scare yourself.

Hence developing your intense fear for that particular circumstances or object. With that development of intense fear of darkness or night, you would most probably avoid getting into those circumstances that you are afraid about and stay away from the object of your fear at all costs.

Reasons Of Nyctophobia

There are a few reasons why you are plagued by Nyctophobia.

  • Externalization: You may be experiencing some inner conflicts that you find difficult to find a solution to. Hence to help you release some of your pent up feelings, you externalize them on the darkness.
  • Traumatized by an occurrence

Research has shown that Nyctophobia may be a result from a traumatic event that may have occurred to the phobic.

Nyctophobia Symptoms

Breathlessness, excessive sweating, vomiting, dry mouth, feeling sick, shaking, heart palpitations, inability to speak or think clearly, a fear of dying, becoming mad or losing control, a sensation of detachment from reality or a full blown anxiety attack.

Most sufferers are surprised to learn that they are far from alone in this surprisingly common, although often unspoken, Nyctophobia.

While adults with Nyctophobia realize that these fears are irrational, they often find that facing, or even thinking about, facing the darkness brings on a panic attack or severe anxiety.
