PLMD Symptoms

PLMD symptoms are daytime sleepiness and insomnia.

People with PLMD may be completely a symptomatic, or they may complain of either excessive daytime sleepiness or insomnia, or both.

Limb movements can be severe enough to wake an individual from sleep, making it difficult to stay asleep for a significant duration and leading to excessive daytime sleepiness.

Symptoms of PLMD are usually leg movements with the extension of the big toe in combination with a partial flexing of the ankle, knee, or hip. Movement of the legs is more typical than movement of the arms.

It can often cause a partial or full awakening, and patients are frequently unaware of these movements.

Leg movements involve one or both limbs.

  • Typically the knee, ankle, and big toe joints all bend as part of the movements.
  • The movements last about 2 seconds (and thus are much slower than the leg jerks of myoclonus).
  • The movements are rhythmic and repetitive and occur every 20-40 seconds.
The movements vary from slight to strenuous and wild kicking and thrashing.
