Sleepwalking sometimes has been associated with violent behaviors against other people around them.
The violent behavior takes place only after the sleepwalking episode has been triggered and is underway.
Ninety percent of the people with sleep walking had some sort of violence in their sleep. Men are more susceptible than women.
Sleep walking occurs when you get up from bed and walk around even though you are still asleep.
It also involves many complex actions. It is common in children and affects both girls and boys.
Sometimes, sleepwalking begins in the old age. Men are more likely to display aggressive behavior than women when they sleep walk.
During the sleep walking event, the person moves around the environment and encounters someone else-most likely a family member. The person may come in contact with the sleep walker and violent behavior may result.
Kicking and hitting with arms and hands is the common type of violent behavior occurring on nightly basis. In some cases, violence can be more serious. Some sleep walkers place their hands around the neck of other person.
Sometimes violent behavior can turn sexual. People sleep walk and commit sexual acts on their partners during sleep and this is described as “sleep sex”.
Sleepwalkers can harm themselves and others, and they can engage in complex behaviors like driving long distances, hurt others with sleep aggression and violence.
Although, sleepwalking cases are great entertainment, sleepwalkers can end up in an uncompromising position. If you get up from bed and walk on to the road, then it can end up in an injury.
Sometimes, sleep walker can come out naked; therefore sleep walker should never go to bed without pajamas.
Violence occurs during sleepwalking when sleep terrors involve. When you get sleep terrors during sleepwalking, you can act out things that happen in your dreams. If you want to escape from something in your dream, you try to leap and fall out from stairs or windows.
Drugs like valium are sued to treat REM behavior disorder, helping you to be calm and paroxetine is used for sleep walking. If sleepwalking is severe, drugs are the option to control it. Frequent use of drugs for different diseases and conditions are related to sleepwalking and violence.
Controlling the situation:
- You should not wake up the sleepwalking person and guide him/her to the bed.
- Windows and doors should be locked throughout the home to avoid injuries and falls.
- Remove sharp things around the bed of the sleep walker otherwise he/she can create violence with those things.
- Place an alarm or bell on the bedroom door of the sleep walker to prevent the violent situations.
