Shift work is the work done in the extended hours and it can also be named as the non standard work schedule.
The regular work time of the humans in their office will vary between 7 in the morning to 7 in the evening, but this custom has changed dramatically and many people are supposed to work in the evening or nigh shifts.
This tradition of shift work will have more adverse effects on the workers both mentally and physically.
They have to face several health problems; some times these simple problems may create some negative health problems like gastric ulcers, diabetes, obesity, etc.
Here are some of the health problems if you continue to perform shift work for long period of time:
- Increase in the risk of getting heart diseases
- Several gastro intestinal complications and gastric ulcers can develop within your body
- You will be affected with sleep disorders like sleep deprivation and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) due to improper sleeping timings
- Some psychiatric disturbances and social problems will also be created due to several mental and physical disturbances.
- Other than these diseases, some other diseases like epilepsy, diabetes, etc can also occur with these improper timings.
Are you afraid with the consequences of shift work? Don’t worry you can tackle the shift work correctly if you take some measures:
- Improve the recreation facilities and workplace lighting in your office.
- Don’t take more than two night shifts (12 hour shifts) consequently in the same week.
- Take frequent breaks in your work when you feel tired or inconvenient by sitting in the same position for long period of time.
- Entertain your self by talking with your colleagues or co-workers if you feel difficult to work for long period of time during nights.
- Follow proper eating patterns and don’t consume heavy meal when you have night shifts because heavy meal forces you to go to sleep and also creates some inconvenience in your stomach.
- After working for several hours at night time, give proper rest for your brain and body by sleeping for some hours during day time. Don’t let any type of disturbance to enter into your mind while sleeping.
- Maintain proper lifestyle according to your shift work and convenience and don’t forget to practice exercise regularly for 30 to 40 minutes. By practicing exercise regularly, your personal fitness as well as your mental health will attain stability and the occurrence of health problems will also be reduced.
Proper diet is also an essential concept to maintain your health in the perfect way. So, maintain good diet according to your lifestyle, age and weight to protect from the occurrence of various health problems due to shift work.
