
Jet lag is the condition which results from traveling multiple time zones.
Flying through multiple zones disturbs your body’s circadian rhythm and results in jet lag.
It is not a serious sleep disorder but it affects your sleep every time you cross the time zone.
Symptoms of jet lag include tiredness, insomnia, fatigue, loss of concentration, discomfort in legs and feet, dry skin, cold, cough, sore throat, nasal irritation, flu and headaches.
Due to the different time zones, your body’s circadian rhythm get disturbed and you may feel difficulty in falling asleep or you may suffer with excessive daytime sleepiness.
It will take time to adjust to your old time schedules after coming back. You can avoid and reduce the symptoms of jet lag by following jet lag remedies.
Jet lag remedies to reduce the symptoms of jet lag:
- Take plenty of rest before travel. This is one of the jet lag remedies which prevent jet lag. If you are traveling with inadequate sleep, it may worsen jet lag.
- If you are suffering with any health problems, consult your doctor and take necessary treatment before departure.
- Don�t work up to the last movement. You have to finish you meetings and other works prior to departure. You have to pack the required things one or two days before.
- Before getting into the flight, do not get exhausted and don’t exercise with full stomach.
- Drink plenty of water before departure, in the flight and after reaching there. Dehydration makes your jet lag worse. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants as they dehydrate your body. Drinking water is one of the best jet lag remedies to avoid jet lag.
- Depending on the direction of the flight, you can adjust your sleep and awakening times before one week of departure. If you adjust your timings according to the travel zone, you may not face difficulty to sleep after getting there.
- Before going for a trip, you take vitamins A, C, and E which will help you in protecting against free radical damage caused by radiation during the flight.
- Take a high carbohydrate meal as it helps in getting good sleep in the flight. If you want to be alert and active, take a high protein diet. Depending on the timings of the flight, you can choose your meal.
- You should not drink alcohol before travel or while traveling as it makes the jet lag symptoms worse. This jet lag remedy works if you stay away with alcohol.
- In daytime flights, it is better to stay awake and keep mentally active. Wear comfortable clothing in the plane which allows you to move freely.
- Try to walk in the plane and exercise your limbs and muscles. As you will sit continuously in one place, you may feel stressed and uncomfortable. By walking, your muscles will be stretched and blood circulation will increase.

- You can listen to calm and soothing music using earphones as you will not be disturbed with other sounds.
- Avoid using sleeping pills as they stimulate, dehydrate and makes you addicted. Take eye masks, neck rests, and slippers to use it in the plane to make yourself comfortable in the flight.
- After arriving there, get some sunlight to adjust to the new time zone. After landing, take a warm Epsom salt bath. Request a room in the hotel which gets good sunlight. According to the new time zone, you can sleep and take your meals. Expose to more sunlight.
