Tuesday 15 April 2008

The pill, known only by the codename BGC20-0166, is a combination of two existing drugs that affect areas of the brain associated with muscles in the airway and airflow.

The apnoea-hypopnea index - a measure of the frequency and severity of breathing pauses through the night - was recorded in overnight studies after 14 days and again after 28 days.

Those who were taking the new pill showed a 40 per cent reduction in symptoms - with patients suffering no side-effects.

Three out of ten people on the new drug had a 50 per cent reduction in symptoms [Remedies to stop snoring].

The drug is being developed by BTG, a life sciences company based in London and Philadelphia.

Thomas Roth, director of the Sleep Disorders and Research Centre at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, claims that taking a daily pill can curb a common snoring disorder affecting thousands of people.

Researchers have begun trialling a drug which helps manage obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSA).

However Marianne Davey, director of the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association, issued a warning. She said: “At the moment, the consensus is that there is no drug therapy that would be completely successful in treating OSA.”

Children With The Problem Of OSA Can Have Abnormal Respiratory-Related Evoked Potentials!

Wednesday 2 April 2008

sleep apneaAccording to the latest research, it has been found that children who are suffering with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are more likely to face several respiratory problems when compared to the normal children of the same age without OSA.

Experts say that this situation arises in children who are suffering with Obstructive Sleep Apnea because they do not contain the same airway closing as the normal children without OSA.

The study performed by jingtao huang, PhD of children’s hospital of Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania has proved some facts.

In their study, they considered 9 children who are suffering with Obstructive Sleep Apnea syndrome and 12 normal children. They conducted upper airway perception tests for both groups of children i.e. with OSAs and without OSAs.

In their tests, they found that the children who are suffering with OSA have developed several respiratory problems because they are not getting support from the protective neurologic responses where as the normal children are getting them.

Due to this problem, children who are suffering with obstructive sleep apnea had increase in their airway muscle tone as a response for the negative pressure. It also increased the breathing load or high carbon dioxide levels are taken in due to this change. Breathing high carbon dioxide levels certainly had negative effects and several lung or respiratory problems results due to this problem.

When you suffer from snoring, your tongue falls back into the throat. If your throat is completely blocked, you cannot be able to breathe for few seconds. Your blood pressure rises when you struggle to breathe. Elevated blood pressure can damage your carotid arteries that line the sides of the neck.

Calcium and cholesterol are attracted by injured areas, which stick to them and gather into calcified plaques. These plaques block flow of blood to the brain, resulting in stroke.

It is very strange to hear this, but it is true, we are unaware of the most important things that we are allergic to. Among which, the most commonly ignored condition is snoring.

Most commonly you think that snoring is mainly due to the causes like larynx or abstraction in the nasal passages, but you will be surprised by hearing that the most common cause of snoring is the snorer’s diet.

Yes, your food in the manner you eat will greatly influence your snoring. Also, being overweight does not help you to get rid of snoring.

Simple diet changes - Key to your snoring

Diet can play a great part in your snoring problem.

Foods to avoid from your diet:

  • Diary products! One of the main reasons which cause your snoring is diary products. Diary products can increase the mucus in your nasal passages, thus your airways become narrow there by restricting the air flow.

How Nasal Congestion Can Result In Snoring?

Friday 9 November 2007

Snoring and Nasal CongestionWhen you have nasal congestion, breathing through nose becomes difficult and breathing takes place through mouth.

When your nasal congestion forces breathing through mouth during sleep, greater negative pressure is developed behind the uvula and soft palate.

The negative pressure increases the vibration of uvula and soft palate during sleep and creates the sound called snoring.

What are the reasons for nasal congestion?

Nasal congestion is caused due to different factors. Seasonal allergies and perennial allergies as well as sinusitis can cause swelling of the nose lining and turbinates, which increases nasal congestion.

Narrow intra-nasal anatomy from deviated nasal septum can cause physical blockages. Airflow is blocked due to sinus and intra-nasal polyps and due to benign and cancerous growths.

Significant congestion can interfere with sleep, cause snoring and is associated with not breathing episodes during sleep. In children, nasal congestion due to enlarged tonsils cause chronic sleep apnea.

The other causes of nasal congestion are common cold and flu, often accompanied by watery discharge from nose, headache, sore throat and cough and hay fever accompanied by watery discharge, sneezing and itchy eyes which can result in snoring.
