Americans Are Sleeping More, Not Less!

good night sleepAccording to the University of Maryland Sociologists, it has been proved that Americans are sleeping more and they are less prone to the problem of sleep disorders.

The latest survey shows that out of 100 percent, only 10 percent of the people are suffering with sleep problems and the rest of them are getting enough sleep necessary for them.

Most Americans work too much. They plan their schedule perfectly and feel themselves like they are on a 24/7 treadmill. In their typical time schedule itself, they are allocating time for their sleep. They feel that without proper sleep or rest, they cannot be able to do the work perfectly.

Nowadays, Americans became more health conscious and they are taking care of their health in each and every aspect. They also found that several disadvantages and health problems (sometimes severe) obtain without proper sleep, so in order to maintain their health in the perfect manner; they are giving preference for their sleep.

Sleep is considered as the essential thing which is necessary for the people of all ages as it makes our body to attain rest. Each and every part of our body will become relaxed while sleeping and they will be recharged or become active with in that time.




FDA Approves First Generic Versions Of Requip For Restless Legs Syndrome

requipThe U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved first generic versions of Requip (ropinirole hydrochloride) for the treatment of moderate to severe Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS).

Gary J. Buehler, Director of the FDA’s office of the Generic Drugs, said that the approval of this generic drug is an example of the FDA’s efforts for increasing access to safe and effective generic drugs as soon as the law permits.

The drug has been approved in the following dosages: 0.25 milligram, 0.5 milligram, 1milligram, 2 milligram, 3 milligram, and 4 milligram.

In addition to treating Restless Legs Syndrome, Requip is also approved to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

The safety warnings for generic ropinirole hydrochloride tablets will be same as Requip, cautioning about patient reports of falling asleep while engaged in activities of daily living, including while driving.

Many patients reported sleepiness while on the drug, but some patients perceived that they had no warning signs and were alert immediately prior to falling asleep. These warning signs have been reported as late as one year after the start of treatment.

Longer Working Hours Making Americans Nodding Off On The Job!

This situation is occurring as they are not getting enough sleep during nights or the sleep hours might have been reduced due to their longer working hours. But, the lifestyle changes can help in reducing the work stress.

According to the research done by the national sleep foundation, more than 60 percent of the Americans are spending 4.5 hours on additional work from home other than the 9.5 hours of average work in a day.

It also says that Americans are working for more hours and they are trying to cope it with daytime sleepiness.

Some of the facts which have been found in the latest research regarding the sleep and working hours of the Americans are:

  • Out of 100 percent working people, 60 percent of them are feeling drowsy in their work and they are accepting their sleepiness going on in their work.
  • To lose their drowsiness in their work, out of 100 percent, 32 percent of them are getting addicted to caffeinated beverages. These caffeinated beverages make them to feel active at that time but they will create more heath problems in long run if they consume them regularly.

Latest Survey On Physicians Reveal That They Require More Sleep!

More factors are responsible for this inadequate sleep like current work schedule, sleep timings, work strain, etc.

According to this survey, more physicians are spending less time in their sleep than they need in order to attain peak performance in their work. They said that their work schedule will not make them to attain the adequate sleep necessary for them.

Another factor which is responsible for the occurrence of less sleep in physicians is caffeine [Effects of caffeine on sleep]. Other than normal people, physicians who are more at work risk, consume caffeine more often in order to attain the feeling of freshness.

Caffeine is the substance, which makes mind and body refreshed, but excess consumption of caffeine can destroy the sleep and results in some health problems.

The recent study conducted on sleeping habits of 5000 US physicians sleep habits proved several facts:

  • Out of 5000 members, 70 percent of them are not attaining good sleep continuously for at least 7 hours per day.
  • 43.5 percent members said that their work schedule is not encouraging them to attain sleep for at least 6.5 hours per day.

NPS Clarifies Issues Related To Stilnox, A Brand Of Zolpidem

sleeping pillThe national prescribing services limited (NPS) is advising their consumers regarding the various adverse reactions, which can obtain when they use the sleeping pills of stilnox.

The actual brand name for the stilnox medicine is zolpidem.

NPS is recommending people who are suffering with sleep disorders to follow non-medicine strategies in solving their problem like relaxation, regular exercise, avoiding some stimulants such as caffeine, tea, cola etc.

They said that this practice will not cause any side-effects, but the results will be seen slowly.

They also said that the consumption of stilnox doesn’t cause any problem to the health of the sleep disorders sufferers unless and until they consume large doses within short period of time. Little consumption is recommended, but should not be taken without physician’s suggestion.

NPS has also issued a chart of potential side effects of zolpidem. Each and every user of this medicine will not obtain same side effects. All side effects which will occur to the person with zolpidem will be dependent on the health of the person and the dose of consumption they take regularly.




Increased Risk Of Sleep Disorders In Children With Migraine: New Research

Sleep DisorderAccording to the research, children with migraine are at increased risk of sleep disorders like sleep apnea than children without migraine.

Severe migraine is associated with short total sleep time, long total time to fall asleep and short REM sleep.

Study was conducted on 90 children, who went for polysomnogram. This sleep test monitors the eye movements, brain, heart rhythm, breathing and muscle activity. In 90 children, who participated in study, 60 had migraine, 11 had chronic headache, 6 had chronic headache and 13 children had non-specific headache.

According to the study, children with migraine are twice at increased risk of sleep apnea, also known as sleep disordered breathing, than other children. Sleep disordered breathing was found in 56 percent of children with migraine than 30 percent of children with non-migraine headache.

The study also found that 50 percent of children with tension headache grind their teeth at night compared to 2.4 percent of children with non-tension headache.

According to the study author Martina Vendrame, MD, PhD, the problems caused by migraine are aggravated by sleep problems on a child’s health and can hinder the performance of a child at school.
