Every child cannot go to bed at night and get all of the required sleep they need.
Bedwetting is a common issue among children. Boys often wet the beds than girls. Boys wet the bed twice as much as girls do. Bedwetting causes stress for your child and also causes embarrassment.
Nightmares can cause bedwetting in your children. Nightmares occur during light sleep and usually awaken the child. Your child will be frightened and wet the bed due to the frightened condition. The anxiety and tension due to the nightmare puts stress on them and wet the bed without their knowledge.
They often wake up by talking, crying and yelling. When nightmare occurs, children do not want to go back to sleep most of the time.
You have to help your child during a nightmare and prevent bedwetting problem. The causes of nightmare can be many. You have to limit your child watching television before bedtime. Avoid your child to watch violent shows, movies and programs. This way you can prevent a nightmare before it happens.
Be prepared with nightmares. You have to go to your child if your child awakens at night by a scary dream. In order to make your child to go back to sleep, you have to give your support as they may need your support.
You have to reassure your child after a bad dream and remind them that you are always there. Speak to your child in a calm manner and tell them it is safe to go back to sleep. Stay with your child as long as they need to, but don’t allow your child into your bed. Make your child comfortable in their own bed.
If your child is not awakened but cry in their sleep, there is no need to wake them up. Do not allow your child to sleep with you. This might give a message to children that they should be afraid of their own beds.
As nightmares cause bedwetting in children, you should be prepared what to do when your child wets the bed.
Steps for Decreasing Bedwetting Caused due to Nightmares
Nightmares are common in children. But, if your child wets the bed due to a nightmare, you should take following steps to decrease bedwetting.
- Reassure your child that bedwetting is common during nightmare and your child is not doing purposefully. You should not punish or blame your child for wetting the bed.
- Do not allow your child to drink large amounts of fluids before bedtime to avoid bedwetting. Tell your child to use the toilet before going to bed.
- Keep extra clothes beside the bed to change when your child wets the bed. Protect the bed with plastic sheets and covers.
- Establish bedtime routines to help your child develop consistent sleep habits. This will train your child to follow the bedtime routine.
- Routines can take stress out of bedtime and thus eliminate nightmares and in turn bedwetting.
