New born babies spent most of the time in sleeping in short segments throughout the day.
New borns sleep eight to nine hours during the day and eight to nine hours during night.
But they need your attention during feeding and settling them after feeding up to six months and even more for some babies.
Throughout the day, the new born babies wake up for feeding and sleep again. You should maintain regular schedule for feeding milk to the new born.
You should fix a schedule which is convenient to you and your baby. Many new parents do not follow the schedule and often new borns have their days and nights confused. You should feed the new born babies for every few hours.
No need to wake a new born baby for feeding, but if the baby is sleeping continuously for five hours or more, then it is necessary to wake the baby for feeding. Whenever your baby wakes up, change the nappy, feed the baby, soothe and settle the baby to sleep.
Make your baby sleep on her back as researchers found that sleeping on the back reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). There are other advantages if you put your baby sleep on her back. Babies won’t spit up or vomit if they sleep on the back.
Make sure if your baby is well. They don’t sleep if they are hungry, pain in the stomach or fever. If you change the new born baby’s bed, then your baby may not sleep in the new environment. Maintain a constant place for them to sleep.
Keep dim light in the room so that if baby wakes up, she can just watch the surroundings without shock. When your baby wakes up, let them play for sometime and watch out for signs such as yawning, tired, and rubbing their eyes. When you observe such signs, settle her to sleep.
Give a relaxing bath in the evening and baby massage which calms your baby. Wrap your baby firmly in the blanket to feel more secure but don’t wrap tightly.
Remove soft toys, pillows, comforters, or any other objects from the bed because they may irritate your baby and disturb their sleep. Take the baby in your arms and cuddle your baby on the back if she starts crying. Babies sleep in the parents hand comfortably and stops crying.
Most babies like listening to soft music. Play soft music if your baby is not sleeping or trying to go to sleep. Don’t cover your baby with blanket completely. Leave the head uncovered because they may not inhale or exhale properly or feel discomfort.
If your baby is not sleeping in her crib, you can take her out and make her sleep with you on your bed. But be careful that your bed should not contain woolen blankets, soft blankets, or any other soft material which can interrupt or dangerous to your baby’s sleep.
Your baby may feel inconvenient or disturbed if you or your partner smokes and take her in your hands. If you or your partner smokes, then better don’t take the baby in your hand. Because of the discomfort your child may not sleep.
Don’t cover your baby with thick blankets or with more number of blankets as overheating may disturb your child to sleep. Use thin blanket to cover her. If the weather is too cool, then you can use a thick blanket.
