Lack of adequate sleep can lead to increased injuries among preschool children, new research shows. This study shows that the average number of injuries during the preschool years is two times higher for children who don’t get enough sleep each day as described by their mothers.

Sleep problems are common among children. As a parent, you will always worry how to make your child sleep all the night. Some children have chronic sleep problems, which makes them, sleep deprived.
Some of the signs to identify child’s sleep problem
- If your child wakes up frequently during night
- If your child snores loudly or face difficulty in breathing while asleep
- If you spend too much time to help your child in falling asleep
- If your child’s mood, behavior and school performance varies
- If you are losing sleep due to your child’s sleeping patterns
- If your child begins to wet the bed
In REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, children wake up crying. You feel that they need help and attend your child. You try to help your child sleep by rocking, feeding, holding or lying down with your child. Therefore, this becomes a habit and your child depends on you to fall asleep.
When you set certain limits for sleep schedule, your child refuses to follow and do not go to bed. You should be consistent and firm when you set the sleep timings, otherwise their behavior will not change even they grow older.
If children do not get enough sleep, they can be drowsy during daytime. When they go to school, due to the drowsiness, falls and injuries can result. They can fall from steps in school or while playing sports or when they stand in corridor. These falls and injuries can be sometimes dangerous for life.
Children also suffer from other sleep problems like sleep walking, bruxism, and night terrors. Among these sleep problems; sleep walking can cause more falls and injuries. Sleep walking occurs in the dream stage of sleep in children.
Children with sleep walking get out of bed and move in an uncontrolled manner. They hurt themselves, losing their balance, hitting against walls, and falling down stairs.
You have to provide emotional support for your children when your child is sleep walking. You have to lock doors and windows and make sure that your child’s bedroom is not near the staircase. Remove all hazardous things in the child’s room.
If your child’s sleep problems continue for long time, then you should talk to your doctor or a sleep specialist for immediate treatment.
